Learning to jump.?
I own a horse. He's a quiet appaloosa named Biggey. I've had him for about 2 months or so maybe not even. I've never had horse riding lessons, my sister semi taught me but I pretty much taught myself with help by the internet.
I've jumped twice when I was little, first time was a little jump I trotted over, second I cantered over with ahorse I couldn't control and I fell off.
Haven't jumped since.
Looking to start jumping, as by 2008 I want to start pony club. Biggey (meh horsey) is a little fat, he's lost so much weight as he was very FAT (looking like a broodmare). No one's tried him over jumps yet so we'll both be re-learning again together. I've looked on youtube and most people use trotting polls with small jumps. Biggey doesn't seem to go so well over trotting polls though. I've tried but i'm bounding around like crazy as he has a long strided trot and it's very lazy >.<
Any suggestiongs? I'll probably be working with meh sister or alone.
I'm guessing by your reference to joining pony club that you are relatively young. As someone who has ridden all her life (and had some great falls!), the best advice I can offer you is to NOT try to learn to jump alone, particularly on a horse that is not a proven jumper.
Jumping correctly requires that you be in correct balance, otherwise you'll be causing distress to your horse. To learn to ride effectively and in balance, you'll need help from a qualified instructor. If you go ahead and try to learn on your own, you risk not only injuring yourself, but you could ruin your horse for future jumping.
If you plan on joining pony club anyway, why not wait till then to start jumping? You do not need to be able to jump to join, and you can learn properly during lessons with your club.
Exercises you can do in the meantime involve riding lots of transitions (walk to trot, walk to canter, canter to trot, etc), riding lots of sitting trot, and riding without stirrups. Although riding over poles on the ground is not dangerous in itself, you need advice from an instructor to make sure that you are distancing them correctly. This may be why you are 'bounding around' when riding over poles now.
But please, for your own safety and the comfort of your horse, do not try learning to jump yourself!
