Market Straight as a Bee Line
I was born in the United States in the Midwest state of Iowa. I have lived the mass majority of my life in the Midwest but for a few years my parents moved us to Anaheim, California. That was when the population in Orange County, California was around 250,000 people. My dad was really a farmer at heart and even though we had first moved into a nice suburb, before long he found a farm in the middle of an orange grove for us to move into. This was where he could grow his large garden and have horses and chickens. He was never a farmer in his adult life but I remember when he became much older and in his retirement he told me that he would have been happier in his life if he had found a way to be in the business of farming like being in the nursery business, some how being able to work the land.
I have been given a gift that I have had even when I was very young. The gift that I was given was one of direction. If you have ever been in an orange grove you know that it isn't any different than being in a corn field. The trees are planted in straight lines and if you go two rows over and two rows to the right or left you can't see where you started from. It is very easy to get lost. However, you could walk me out from our home in any direction and tell me to go home and I would turn towards the house and be able to make a bee line to home. I just never got lost and that has stayed with me my whole life. With that gift of direction I was always the leader of us kids back to home when we had been playing all day long and it was getting dark. My sister would just say, "Okay, Hunter, let's go home." I would turn and lead the way back to home without ever thinking about it.
In those times {early 1950's} people didn't have much fear of other people bothering your child so when we had migrant workers {mostly Mexicans} come to pick oranges my mom had no problem letting us kids out to play. She didn't have a second thought about our safety. I noticed that these workers were hot and sweaty. So I thought that I should be helpful and give them some water to drink. Mom helped me put large Tupperware bowls of water in my little red wagon and I took the water out to the workers with a cup and was told that I all I had to say was Agua, which means water in Spanish. She knew I wouldn't get lost. I remember this clearly because of my parents telling the story of my helping these workers by going up and down the rows of trees yelling up to these Mexicans, "Iowa, Iowa." There have been many laughs over my helping those Mexican workers. I did remember when I looked up at these men that they were all smiling and many of them were chuckling, as well.
A couple of my other first memories in life were there in that orange grove and they involved bees. My first memory ever was when I was walking back home one evening and saw a line of ants leading to a bee in the gravel road. I realized that the bee was being picked on by these ants and thought that I should help that poor bee and so I picked it up and brushed the ants off. The bee was able to then fly away but he left his stinger in my thumb. I am sure that it was the pain I experienced that made it such a memorable moment. Another memory I had was when my friend Frankie and I came across 6 bee hives in the grove. The owners liked to raise bees because it helped to pollinate the trees. Well, boys being boys we picked up clods of dirt and threw at the hives to get them riled up. We succeeded. They came at us by the hundreds. So we turned and thought that we had out run them by the time we got to the house. However, when I turned around one of the bees stung me on my forehead. Pain is really something that we hardly ever forget.
So what does this all have to do with marketing. I hope you can get a couple of things out of this as you start or continue your business online. The first one is this: Do what you really love online. Have a business that you want to do. You have the opportunity online to make a business that you have a real feeling for, a passion. If you love horses, then don't start a business online that is wrapped around forklift parts. The many hours you are going to put into this business will become such a burden in a very short period of time if you are doing something that you don't really care about. If my father would have started a business online with farm equipment or selling seeds or something to do with farming he would have been happy as a lark. And the side effect of this is that you will attract people that have an interest in what you love. Before long you will be having people tell other people about your site who will tell other people and so on and so on. This is one of the easiest ways to attract people to your site and grow your business. When you write articles and put them on article directories the people who will pick up your articles and spread them around will see with your written word that you know what you are talking about. People will see your site and understand that you enjoy your work. Word spreads fast online just like it does offline. Even if you aren't the best web site designer or have a great knack for setting up the sales pages, etc., people will be able to see that you know the topic and... Content is King online. This sells to everyone. Put yourself out there and understand that there are millions of people that will look in your direction. They will come to you like that bee came to me - straight as a bee line. You might love to be that entrepreneur that buys and sells domains. Or you might want to buy older and aged domains and rehab them, make them new again. {This is a great way to get traffic to your site. Buy a domain that already has PageRank with Google. Buy one that already has a name pertinent to your topic and is 6 months to a year old.} It really doesn't matter what you have a passion for, the Internet is one of the best places to start a business. The markets may go up and down like real estate or the stock markets, but the Internet is not going away.
The second thing that I hope you take from my orange grove experience is that people tend to remember pain. What ever you do online be sure to make it a good experience for those who come to your site. Be sure to overwhelm them with value and customer service. They will remember if you did them wrong and it will not help you to establish yourself as the 'go to guy'. People don't tend to remember that your were there to help them {like I was when trying to help that bee}, but they will remember that you shorted them that $7. Why I don't know, but I do know that it is true online and offline.
Google has been teaching us for years now that you can be number one if you give value to your customers way beyond what they expected. I call Google the 'laughable teacher'. You may not remember but when Google started people laughed at them for taking that approach to marketing. Give people more than they expect and you will draw people to you like bees to flowers and have customers swarm in your direction. They will make a bee line straight to your web site.
