Avoid injuries while you are around your horse
When you play horse games on the internet, everything is so easy when it comes about injuries and your safety, but when you are surrounded with real horses, things can be more complicated. Riding horse is not an easy job, it asks for lots hours of training, but statistics show that people actually don't get hurt while they are on the horse's top, even if they are riding really fast without a saddle or they are jumping obstacles. More dangerous is when they are near the horses, on the ground, doing some simple things as grooming with a brush.
It is really important that you should wear a helmet when you are leading, when you are feeding or grooming a horse, and stay alert. There should be a shortest distance between you and your horse while you are doing this, to keep from biting. Because of their constitution, horses can easily turn their head quickly and bite you.
In a case the horse wants to kick you, it is better not to be too far. When you are closer you won't feel much of the impact, the full effect of horse's kick will be felt if you are farther away.
When you do something, the horse should know your position, to know where you are and to be aware when you are approaching him, all the time. Never make any sudden movements, remain calm and make sure the horse knows it's not alone. When you are grooming, start from the front, going to the back and know his ticklish areas. If you tickle him, it is more likely that he is going to kick you.
When you are feeding him, keep the fence in between the horse and yourself. Also never place him between you and the exit when you are doing any work in the barn.
Talk to the horse soothingly when you do some work. It is better to teach him things early, so he would not have any bad habits. He must learn that he should not eat out of your hand, that he should not eat sugar… Bring him around people so he could be familiar with different kinds of distractions, such as flags flying and loud music.
Even if the horse is naughty, never mistreat him. In his nature is to try and to be free so treat him with respect. However, make sure that the horse knows that you are in control by being firm, but not too firm.
