What Does Cold-Blooded Horses Mean?
The differences in the characteristics of horses can be determined by the classification of a breed. There are three classifications: cold blood, hot blood, and warm blood.
Here we are discussing the cold blood classification. Cold blood horses are well-muscled draft horses. The breeds were developed for strength and also temperament. After horse breaking your cold blood horse is ready to pull heavy loads (like a carriage full of people or goods) or pull plows.
Cold blooded horses are big. Their statue overpowers men standing right next to them. Even at such a menacing size they are noted for having a calm, patient, and steady demeanor. Sometimes cold-blooded horses are called gentle giants. This is a good thing since children are drawn to them. Be advised to always supervise your children around any animal.
There are well more than a dozen well-known draft breed horses, and even more that have been developed to adapt to local conditions around the world. For example, draft horses have been developed to be lighter and more energetic to pull carriages or to plow large fields in drier climates, while others have been developed to be more muscular and even more powerful so as to plow heavy clay-based soil fields.
One of the cold-blooded horses that you are likely the most familiar with is the Clydesdale. You've seen the Budweiser Clydesdales pulling that sleigh through a beautiful countryside many times on holiday commercials for Anheuser-Busch. I always loved these commercials. They brought imagination and whimsical fancy around the Clydesdales.
You've probably seen Belgian horses, as well. These giants can grow to be between 6 and 7 feet tall at the withers and weigh about a ton. You might know of Radar. He's a gelding that stands 6 feet 7 inches tall at the withers and weighs over 2,400 pounds. Radar is used by Priefert Ranch Equipment for promotions.
The commercial will show Radar pulling the latest farm blades as proud as he could be. His steady gate eases down the country road headed off to a hard days work.
Every little boy or girls dreams of riding atop one of these magnificent horses. Bigger boys and girls want to learn how to train a horse. Once you have seen the size and strength of a cold-blooded horse you will never forget it. You will be compelled to wonder at them.
