The Snowy Mountains is for people who appreciate the outdoors
For an invigorating holiday in crisp air, book Snowy Mountains accommodation and experience 'alpine' Australia. The Snowy Mountains, commonly referred to as the 'Snowies' is Australia's biggest and highest mountain range. The highest mountain is Mount Kosciuszko which peaks at 7310 feet.
The four other main peaks are all higher than 2100 meters. The range is situated in New South Wales and forms part of the Great Dividing Range as well as the Australian Alps. The region is the only true alpine area in the country. During the middle of winter (June, July and early August), snow falls are heavy.
The alpine climate is characterized by crisp, cool air. Temperatures in July hover around minus 6C. In mid-summer, January, the average temperature is a comfortable 21C. This is one of the few areas in Australia that experiences four distinctive seasons each year.
The area can be accessed easily by road, air, or coach from the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Most visitors come by vehicle as this is a great way to see the area. Those who are traveling from afar can utilize the numerous bus services or catch a flight from Canberra.
The Snowies attract visitors during all seasons of the year. If you love the great outdoors, you will be in your element here. There are majestic mountain peaks, crystalline streams and a plethora of natural beauty and fascinating sites, all of which can be easily accessed. The best ways to appreciate the Snowies during summer is on horseback and walking.
There are many adventurous walking trails to suit any level of fitness. Walk on the 'Rooftop of Australia' and see wildlife as you head towards the Thredbo River. It is highly advisable to choose a guided walk as mountain weather can be very unpredictable. If you choose not to use a guide, be sure to take a compass and a map.
Also take a heavy waterproof jacket and a jumper, even if you go exploring in the summer. Inform family and friends of your intended destination and the estimated time of your return. It would also be advisable to log your details in the register at the Visitor Center. This office is located in the town of Jindabyne at the foot of the Snowies.
