The Essential Equestrian Supplies for an Older Horse
Do you own a horse getting up there in age? Horses are generally considered a senior when they hit about twenty years old. This doesn't mean they can put to the side and forgot about. It couldn't be further from the truth. Senior horses need more from you now than ever before. After years of love and friendship, doesn't your senior horse deserve the specialized care it requires?
Like you or me as we get older, a horse's body begins to slow down. Parts start to break down and not work as well. Senior horses begin to experience problems with their eyes, teeth, joints, liver, gut and kidneys. As its principal caretaker, it is important you pay more attention to the needs of the senior horse, especially the areas mentioned earlier. You'll need to provide more attention, time, and specialized equestrian supplies to make its golden years a little easier.
Older horses typically experience a difficult time with walking, especially so if they are suffering from arthritis. Imagine how painful it must be for a horse that has spent a lifetime of walking and running around the pasture. Painful leg joints mean it is difficult and cumbersome for the horse to walk to its feed, go get a drink, and frolic with the other animals. You need to help make the horse's life as easy as possible since its care is your responsibility.
Another great way to help out your senior horse is by scheduling a visit to the veterinarian to have him or her do a check on the horse's liver and kidney function. While you are there, ask the vet to run some blood work as well. If the vet finds any problems or issues, they will provide you with the necessary medication to give the animal and also recommend a healthier diet to feed the senior horse. Also make sure the horse's teeth are examined. It is important a senior horse has its teeth checked at least once a year.
It is very common for senior horses to start losing weight since they cannot chew their feed ass easily. If you find this is a problem for your horse, you should look at changing up its diet to include easier to chew and to digest feeds. These are simple solutions to help the senior horse gain back some of that lost weight.
Another common issue with senior horses is colic. This is due to their inability to properly chew their food or they stop drinking enough water. This happens when they don't have the energy to walk to a source of drinking water. Remedy this by placing water troughs in the pasture to prevent dehydration or colic issues.
