Lima's Events and Festivals
Peruvians love any excuse to have a celebration. All across the country, communities go to great lengths to celebrate religious ceremonies and other local events. Many of the celebrations combine pre-Columbian and Catholic influences. Peru's capital city, Lima, is an excellent place to observe Peruvian traditions and culture during one of the following events.
January
Epiphany Celebration of the Three Kings: In early January, visitors can sample local Peruvian specialties
Anniversary of Lima's Foundation: In mid-January there are a number of activities in the Plaza de Armas, including outdoor music, dancing, and fireworks
Concurso Nacional de Marinera: In late January, this traditional Peruvian dancing competition includes brightly colored costumes and excellent dance moves
February
Carnaval: From February to March, the lively parties mark the beginning on the carnaval season
Verano Negro Festival: A celebration of the city's Afro-Peruvian heritage, featuring traditional music, dancing, and partying in the streets near the Plaza de Armas
March
Fiesta de la Vendimia de Surco: This vineyard harvest festival is located in the Santiago de Surco area and includes tastings and winemaking demonstrations
April
Peruvian Jazz Festival: In mid-April the International Jazz Association of Peru hosts concerts and workshops with a number of leading jazz artists
Peruvian Paso Horse Competition: During mid-April this competition makes for an interesting day in the Miraflores district of Lima
Holy Week: Semana Santa includes large celebrations throughout Peru, with the biggest being on Good Friday and Easter Saturday.

Festival of the Crosses: Held on the first Sunday in May on top of San Cristobal Hill, where 14 crosses lead to the top
June
Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun): On June 24th, this Inca celebration takes place across much of the country, but the celebrations in Lima are much lower key than those in Cusco
Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul: This religious event on June 29th always draws a large crowd
July
Fiesta Patrias: Peru's independence days are also national holidays that fall on July 28th and 29th. There are a variety of events around the Plaza de Armas and nearby parks
August
Feast of Santa Rosa de Lima: At the end of the month there are parades, partying, dancing, and other family fun
September
Concurso Departamental del Caballo Peurano de Paso: A leading equestrian event held in the Afueras de Lima area between September and November
October
Virgin of the Rosary Festival: Held on the first Sunday of October, the gathering occurs at Santo Domingo Monastery
Feria Taurina del Senor de los Milagros: During mid-October to November, this festival of bullfighting attracts large crowds
El Senor de los Milagros: In late October, there is a major parade through the streets of the city, starting at the Church of Las Nazarenas which honors the patron saint of the city. The faithful dress in mauve for the month. The largest procession are on the 18th, 19th, and 28th.
November
San Martin de Porres Festival: Held in early November this event remembers the life of San Martin
Fiesta de Todos los Santos: All Saints Day is a religious event is also a national holiday throughout Peru
Dia de los Muertos: All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead is a friendly festivity
December
Christmas Celebrations: Occur throughout December and early January, there are yuletide events, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, and events relating to the Three Wise Men
Battle of Ayacucho: Re-enactments of the historic battle offer a taste of the past, along with lots of life music
