How many horses can you keep on a 350 acre property?
For breeding purposes, I mean. Also, which one of these is the hardiest breed with a good temperament: Arabian, Akhal-Teke, Turkoman, Caspian, Andalusian, Kathiawari, Lipizzan, Friesian
Anyone have breeding experience with any of these? Which would be the best to breed? (I think Kathiawari will be the most profitable since it's very rare and in demand for crossing with thoroughbreds) There are no budget constraints.
Thanks
@CrazyHorseLady - That's a good point you make about the demand for horses, thanks for that. The training and feeding aren't gonna be a problem though
@PatA - This isn't really gonna be like a business, it'll be more of a passion project for me. Good point though
there's a few things to consider when answering this.
what type personality are you? will you match those breeds? are you doing this for passion and well being of the horse(s)? or just for profit? how do you plan to feed and train these horses? etc.
where will this land be located? in an area with a long or short grazing season? hot and dry area? fairly well balanced seasons? etc.
me, personally, i live on the ky/tn border. because it gets so dry, i need to go 3 - 5 acres per horse. when i lived up north, 1 acre per horse worked well. here on the border, even with the amt of land, per horse, i still have to supplement the pasture with hay, starting in late july/early august, and continue to feed hay through march - april. up north, i fed hay from october to april or may.
as for breeds, i work best with arabs and arab crosses. i love their personalities and intelligence. i've never met a "crazy arab". i have a polish arab and a national show horse (arab x saddlebred)...and they're AMAZING with my young children. my 8 yr old son has terminal cancer, and my horses are absolutely gentle with him. they have taken to protecting him from the dogs and our poa.
over all, with breeds, it will depend a lot on how they've been handled/treated...as much as proper breeding.
i'm sure this was little help to you, but hope you will find some use in this.
