It's all about timing for Phoenix Sports Technology
PST'S VELODROME MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Phoenix Sport's Velodrome Management System is a timing solution which encompasses a software, hardware and cabling system used for major racing events around the world. The VMS is a proprietary application that integrates with a variety of timing devices. "We've tried to be as Open Source as we can," explained Phoenix Sports Technology's Fred Patton, "We look at this product as the glue that holds everything else together." The VMS can essentially be applied to any brand of timing equipment or scoreboard, and the VMS will allow customers to "paste" those together. Patton adds, "Its something that we feel very strongly about...people should have the opportunity to select what (hardware) they want."
HAVE TRACK, WILL TIME IT
The VMS is able to be applied to various types of hardware based on the simple technological concept of serial connectivity. Although this may seem as a "crude" approach, says Patton, the type of data being transferred really only requires this type of technology. PST is able to provide such flexibility with thier VMS because most timing devices are physically setup to use serial connections. No matter whcih platform a customer requires, the VMS is simply able to adapt. The true focus of the technology is how the raw data is calculated and presented. According to Patton, "It's (the VMS) creating its own 'net time reality'." With so many time stamps being driven through the system, the VMS constantly re-calculates the running net times. Along with collecting all of this incoming data, the system is constantly checking and re-calculating the net running time to negate any descrepencies. This is done to ensure accuracy when the scores are being sent out to scoreboards, broadcasters or the internet. As Patton explains, "The person watching that presentation doesn't see any interruption. Its a seemless presentation."
FROM CYCLING AND SKIIING TO EQUESTRIAN SHOW JUMPING AND MOTORSPORTS, PHOENIX SPORTS TECHNOLOGY HAS IT COVERED
Phoenix Sports Technology's timing services reach far beyond track cycling and velodromes. PST are also invloved in major racing events such as auto racing, show jumping and skiing. Being exposed to many different types of events can pose a challenge in applying the best timing solution given the physical environments in which those technologies. For Patton, these challenges provide opportunities in which to discover new solutions. "one of the great things about our business is that we're able to utilize various techniques and technologies for one sport that may not have been thought about but work well in another." he said. One example of this is wireless timing technology. Patton explains, " The first sport we were involved in that embraced wireless technology was equestrian show jumping. That was because of the ease of installation of wireless technology in a (show jumping) arena." PST later tested this concept of wireless technology to downhill ski racing. It was not long before they had realized the environmental conditions did not favor wireless timing devices. No trial is conducted without learning valuable lessons, and PST have since learned to adapt wireless technology to a number of sports they are involved in.
For the past 10 years, PST implements thier systems and installation at the Junior World Championships of Cycling, where the event is held anywhere from Cape Town, South Africa to this coming year in Moscow, Russia. Steps to a Better Logo Design!
Know your audience
- Know Your Customer
In order to design a good logo, you need to know your customer and your customer's customer, as well. Many customers may come to you and request a particular style of logo, or the use of a particular symbol. Dig deeper to find out what is unique about your customer, how they solve their customer's problems, and who their target market is.
- No Idea is Too Stupid
Brainstorming is often the key to a good logo. After you've fully explored your customer and their market, begin writing down words that apply to your customer. In fact, this is a step you should do with your customer. If your customer won't spend time in a "formal" brainstorming session, at least get them to give you a list of words that describe their company. Don't discard anything as too "stupid"; sometimes the more "out there" the idea is, the more unique the resulting logo will be.
- Consider the competition
We hotly debated on the forum recently whether or not a company's logo should stand out. I believe that it should; that that is the whole purpose of a logo to stand out from the crowd. Others argued that while a logo should be unique, it should still be similar to other logos of similar companies.
Whatever your opinion on the subject, it's a good idea to take a look at the competition. The Yellow Pages can be a good starting point. Magazines devoted to your customer's industry may also be helpful. A search on the Web will doubtless turn up a variety of logos for the competition.
Consider the customer's budget
When you interview a prospective client, it's important to ask about their budget; not only for the design of the logo, but also for printing. Maybe they're a large company and can afford four color process printing, or have a need for four color advertising.
Maybe they're a medium sized business, and can afford two color printing with bleeds and metal plates. Then it's okay to use shades of a color, and touching colors as this sort of logo will require metal plates to be printed, which drives up the cost of printing.
What if it's a small start-up company with a limited budget? You might consider a one color design, with shades of that one color. You'll still need metal plates, but you'll only need one, which will cut costs considerably. Or you might design a two color logo, but one that doesn't use shades of those colors and whose colors don't touch. Then you can get away with laser copy for camera ready or veloxes; metal plates won't be required, and costs will be significantly reduced.
Start without the Computer
The computer can be a wonderful tool for designing. You can work up ten variations of a design in a matter of minutes, often designs that might not have even occurred to you without the flexibility of a computer. Whether or not you can draw, I encourage you to start designing without your computer.
Designing without the computer really forces you to focus on the job at hand. Instead of just grabbing the rectangle or ellipse tool, you begin to really think about what that rectangle or circle says about the company.
If you've never made sketches before designing a logo, I encourage you to try. You may be surprised at the results.

What are the best colleges with equestrian/horseback riding programs?
I really Like Hollins University and Sweet Briar College. They both Have great riding programs. I'm leaning towards SBC because you can compete as a Independent Competitors while on a team. They also have a IHSA team, Hunter Team, Jumper Team and a few others. I want to find a school where they show alot.
What I'd like to know has more to deal with riding programs: IHSA? Varsity equestrian? What schools can get me the most riding experience with or without an equestrian major? Honestly, I refuse to give it up, and the conclusion is that any sort of school with a riding program and preferably some riding classes and a show program is much more effective than paying for board, lessons, show fees, leases, etc. all on my own. I would rather not do ncaa aka Varsity equestrian because you can't accept prize money and yea.
I don't mind women colleges or any of that.

The Difference Between Horses and Ponies
So what's the difference between a horse and a pony? Aside from the height difference and girls' obvious preference for the latter, ponies is generally stockier than your average horse. While the horse is used for racing, ponies are generally used as riding and driving. Horses are generally faster than ponies which are why people prefer to measure the strength of an engine in "horse powers," and not in "pony powers."
Let's talk about the height of a pony first. Your average pony is usually 14.2 hands tall. If a horse is over 14.2 hands he is considered a horse and no longer a pony. There are certain exceptions for this rule though as ponies in Australia measure under 14 hands. According to the International Federation for Equestrian sports, a horse is deemed a pony if it is 148 centimeters and below without shoes. Some horses and ponies produce offspring that are both over and under this cutoff as ponies are still horses regardless of size. There are also some ponies that exceed the height limit of ponies but are still considered as such due to certain qualities and characteristics which they posses that are more pony-like then horse-like.
Ponies also differ from horse in appearance. The manes, tails and coat of ponies are thicker. Their legs are also shorter in proportion to their bodies. They have wider barrels and have thicker and shorter necks. Their heads are also shorter and their foreheads are broad. They are generally calmer than horses and have a high level of intelligence for horses. The shortest known pony in the world is Thumbelina who stands at 17 and ½ inches.
Ponies are generally used for riding and driving, depending on the breed. A breed like the Welsh Pony is used for both. They are also entered in many competitions showing off both their skills and their beauty. Some ponies, such as the Shetland Pony, are even used as seeing eye companions by the blind. They are quite similar to the Seeing Eye dog. Ponies are also used in carnivals where they give pony rides to children and in petting zoos.
Fascination for ponies is common among children especially among little girls. A lot of toys are manufactured in the likeness of ponies and shows with ponies as the lead characters have also been created. Ponies are going to be with us for as long as our love and fascination for ponies endure.
