3 Tips for Improved Horse Photography
Horse Photography Tip #1 - Choosing the right lens length DOES make a difference
Have you been having trouble with your images of horses? Does the horse's head look elongated and silly, and does his body look disproportional? You may be using too short a lens on your camera.
If you photograph a horse while standing very close and with a short lens, say 28mm or 35 mm or even 50mm, you will get unpleasant results.
The short lens distorts the image. Horses' heads are already long and so are their bodies. If you want a humorous image, then by all means use your short lens close up. But if you want a quality conformation shot, I recommend going to a longer lens. The longer lenses compress the horse's body and head and make a more pleasing representation. I recommend using at least a 100 mm lens and preferably longer, like 200 mm. If you like the flexibility of zoom lenses, one of my favorite lenses for shooting domestic horses is the 70 - 200 zoom.
In summary, to improve your photos of horses, use a longer lens and step back.
Horse Photography Tip #2: Capture Details for a New Point of View!
When you think of equine photography, you may think of a standing horse, or maybe running, and that image could be of the entire horse. But if you want to try something new and different, concentrate on details. Details can be the close up of a horse's eye. Step back and zoom in, and observe what reflects in the eye - is it you or something else in the background? Are the eyelashes in focus? Did you capture the gleam of light in the horse's eye? That will really make your image pop. Tail braided for an exhibition in Spain
Zoom in on a braided mane or a tail, like the photo of this carriage horse from Spain, or zoom in on the feet as they travel. Think about tack and clothing, and get close for a shot of a cowgirl's boot and/or spurs.
Imagine the contour of a horse's body and try to show the details of the curves. Does the horse have spots or splashes of color on his body? How about focusing on an interesting shaped mark? There are no wrong choices, and part of improving your skills as a photographer is trying new things, and looking at your world and what you are photographing in a new way. Focusing on details can help keep your images fresh and exciting.
Horse Photography Tip #3: What time of Day is Best to Take Photos of Horses?
When you are photographing horses and other subjects, take into account the quality and quantity of light on your subject. We see because of light, and we can photograph because there is light. Taking advantage of the best light so that you can improve your photos is important.
Have you noticed that in the middle of the day, shadows are harsh and unflattering? On the other hand, in the early morning and the late afternoon, the light is softer, and just after sunrise and just before sunset is that time we call "magic light" when your subject will glow with the warm tones of the light.
I try to schedule all my shoots either in the early morning or late afternoon. Two hours before and after dawn are the ideal times. If you have trouble getting your subjects out of bed early in the morning, as I occasionally do, try for late afternoon.
If you have to shoot in the middle of the day, find some shade - a tree, the side of the barn, or if it is a cloudy day, the light is diffuse and you can shoot later.
I recommend experimenting with this, and taking photographs at different times of the day. See how the time of day and quality of the light changes your photos. If you pay attention to the light, I promise your photos will improve.

Equipment for Horse Owners
With the ever-increasing range of horse equipment available on the market we took a look at the essentials that every horse owner should have.
Well other than the horse your first thing you would require is a halter. The continental design is the best as it allows for the use of a chain should it be required. Most halters manufactured today are continental in design. Extra features include safety clips (they are important if you intend turning your horse out with a halter on) lining for the nose and poll. Which one you select will largely depend on your budget and taste, as they are available in almost every possible.
Next you will need a lead rope, a thicker softer lead rope is advisable, and if it has a loop on the end cut it off or loosen it, lead reins should never have a loop at the end. Ideally a lead rein should measure between 5-7 feet in length, as they are the most versatile
Spare feeder and water bucket even if your horse is boarded it is advisable to have your own spare set to ensure that should your horse get sick or it's bucket suddenly disappears your horse does not suffer water deprivation. It is advisable to have at least two hay nets as well
Grooming kit also advisable to have two of if possible allowing for changeover and cleaning without interrupting the grooming routine. Mark your hoofpick well, as it is usually the first thing to wander off in any yard. Invest in a few spares.
Two working bridles, it is advisable when buying a horse to enquire as to the possibilities of getting the bridle with the horse as well, more often than not the seller would be willing to part with the bridle (unless it's a Keiffer or Stubben that is) Buy a spare bridle and oil it well to have available in the event of the working bridle breaking
Working boots
Brushing boots is advisable for everyday riding, unless your horse requires specialized boots, which you would be informed of when purchasing, or after having had the horse vetted. Speak to your stable manager or instructor as to the most suitable boots.
Saddle a well-fitted saddle that's to your choice and riding style. Check your saddle every three months to ensure it's correct fit.
Rugs and clothing
Day sheet, used mostly after bathing a horse to get the coat to lie flat, of for travelling.
Sweat sheet used to cool your horse down and prevent chills on cool or cold days. Often confused with a flysheet, a sweat sheet has the same appearance as a flysheet. It is however heavier and does not have the belly straps
Flysheet if you own a grey horse or one with sweet itch this should be second on your list (after bug spray that is) placed on horses whilst turned out to prevent insect bites and stings.
Exercise blanket. If your horse is to be clipped in the winter and it snows in your area this is a must have, it keeps the back and quarters warm whist working.
Rugs Depending on your stabling arrangements and climate you may require up to three rugs. If stabled your horse could have a lighter duvet rug whilst indoors, and then have this exchanged for a New Zealand or Weatherbeta for when turned out. It is advisable to have at least two turnout rugs should you have wet winters with snow, as this allows for them to dry properly prior to being used on the horse again.
Should your horse live out it would require at least two New Zealand rugs. Ensure that the waterproof lining is intact and not allowing moisture to seep through.
Bandages
Exercise bandages, these are made of elastic or ribbed fabric, although not as fashionable as boots, exercise bandages have one benefit over boots if applied correctly they are a perfect fit where most boots are only near perfect. Used to protect the legs whilst in work and to support tendons. Also helps with beeping the legs warm in the winter
Stable bandages these used to be made of wool of flannelling, today they are often made of fleecing. Every owner needs at least one pair on stable bandages; these are used from bandaging for warmth or for the proper drying of legs to extra support for wound dressings.
Medical or First Aid Kit
Regardless of whether your horse is boarded or not every owner should have their own first aid kit, here is the basic kit for horse owners
• Crepe bandages and safety pins
• Scissors
• Cotton wool (lots and lots)
• Disposable nappies
• Thermometer
• Gentian violet spray often referred to as purple spray
• Disinfectant (Hibiscrub or Hibitane is best)

• Vit E salve or oil
• Eye ointment ideally Exocin drops
• Epson salts
• Bicarbonate of soda
• Syringes various sizes
• Latex gloves
• Electrolytes
• Cotton self adhesive bandages (Elastoplast)
• Cooling gel
• Instant ice pack
• Gauze pads
• Jelonet or paraffin gauze
More advanced include

Steve Jobs $14.99 FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted. Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values. |

Off to a Good Start? Jobs for Youth $40 Promoting a smooth transition from school to work, and ensuring that youth are given the opportunities to move on in their careers and lives, have long been issues of fundamental importance for our economies and societies. Today, they are even more pressing challenges as the global economy emerges from the worst crisis of the past 50 years. Indeed, young people have borne much of the brunt of the recent jobs crisis. The youth unemployment rate is approaching 20% in the OECD area, with nearly 4 million more youth among the unemployed than at the end of 2007. . The initial experience in the labour market has a profound influence on later working life. Getting off to a good start facilitates youth integration into the world of work and lays the foundation for a good career, while it can be difficult to catch up after an initial failure. In particular, the jobs crisis is likely to leave long-lasting “scarring” effects on some of the current generation of school-leavers, particularly if they face multiple disadvantages, such as having low skills and also coming from a disadvantaged background. . Tackling the youth jobs crisis requires a strong commitment from all: the youth themselves, the government through well-targeted and effective policy measures, social partners though their participation in the dialogue, and other key actors – such as teachers, practitioners and parents – who can really make a difference to investing in youth. . This report makes an important contribution to a new agenda of youth-friendly employment policies and practices. It analyses the situation of youth employment and unemployment in the context of the jobs crisis and identifies successful policy measures in OECD countries. But it also discusses structural reforms in education and in the labour market that can facilitate the transition from school to work. The report draws on both recent data and the main lessons that emerged from the 16 country reviews conducted as part of the OECD Jobs for Youth/Des emplois pour les jeunes programme. |

Vinyl Cafe Odd Jobs $29.59 Like other releases in Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe series, this presents some of his one-man storytelling performances of tales from his CBC Vinyl Cafe radio program, recorded at several Canadian concerts. You certainly can't argue with the value here: two CDs with four stories each, running for about two-and-a-half hours in all. Each monologue is of the consistent standard listeners have come to expect from McLean, mixing humor and insight in its documentation of the tribulations of a Toronto family, without falling into pathos. Some of these are indeed primarily funny pieces, like the attempt to install a new wall plug for the toaster that ends on the verge of a house wrecking party; the mutinous cunning of "Arthur the Dog"; and an embarrassed housewife hiding nude in the kitchen cupboard when unexpected visitors arrive. Others, however, venture into more serious territory, though they're not delivered in an overly somber manner: a letter from the widow of a childhood baseball coach, a son's music lessons setting off thoughts weighing respected academic study against the joy of doing art for the fun of it, and worries about whether elderly good neighbors are on the verge of deathly illness. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

Lessons to Learn $31.95 This is the inside story of the more than 80,000 recent college graduates who have joined Teach for America and committed two years of service to teaching in the nation's most troubled public schools. These inexperienced teachers come to class armed with little more than their idealism and the conviction that every student, regardless of race or background, deserve an excellent education. They take the toughest jobs at the toughest schools in the toughest districts, and they face the raw realities of America's public education system: dilapidated schools, too few books and overcrowded classrooms. Written in the tradition of Studs Terkel, Lessons to Learn showcases the insights of a wide range of individuals with real life expertise, combining interviews and essays from TFA corps members and alumni as well as principals, superintendents, parents and noted education experts. Current and former TFA members reflect on their teaching successes and failures, the life lessons they gathered along the way and their insights about the challenges facing our nation's public schools. Education professionals and other experts help to establish the broader context of the fight for meaningful public education reform.Lessons to Learn is essential reading for teachers, parents, policy makers and anyone who cares about the fate of this nation's struggling public education system. |

Yesterday Was Better – A Fun Bible Object Lesson for Your Kids
As Christians, I think many of us have points in our lives to which we could go back. Job certainly did. If anyone should have wanted to go back to the way things were in the past, I would think it was Job. But thankfully, Job learned to trust God like never before. I think he understood that his present day life could be just as joyous as his past. Your children may have longings for yesterday especially in regards to their friendship with Jesus. Here is a fun Bible object lesson to help them learn that if their relationship with Jesus isn't as joyful as it used to be, they can learn to trust Him today for a new and renewed joy.
Here's what you do:
The object you will use for this lesson will be a calendar.
Ask the following questions to help stimulate discussion:
1. What am I holding? (Wait for responses.) That's right. It's a calendar.
2. Who can tell me what they were doing last September? (Wait for responses.) Or how about last summer in July?
3. Is there a month where you wish you could go back to? And if so, why? (Wait for responses.)
4. Do you remember the story of Job and how he lost everything? (Remind the children of this story if they are not familiar with it.) If anyone should want to go back to the way things were in the past, I would think it was Job.
5. Now, how about your relationship with Jesus. Have any of you ever felt like you were closer to God in the past than you are today? (Wait for responses. If the children are having a difficult time with this question, you might give an example from your own life.)
6. Job said the following: "O that I were as in months past." (NIV).
7. Say the following: Job may have wanted things to be the way they were, but by the end of the story he learned to trust God for his joy today.
8. Let's learn a little more about this Bible verse from Job and learn how to apply it to our own lives. Here are 3 important points.
Point 1: Do you ever wish for things to be the way they used to be? Take for example your friendship with Jesus. Are you not feeling quite as close to Him as you have in the past? Do you feel like He's far away and you wish you could be closer to Him again? Your friendship with Jesus used to be great and growing, but now life seems ho-hum.
Point 2: Maybe there's a reason why you're not as joyful about Jesus as you have been in the past. Here are some possible reasons to think about.
1. You haven't been praying as much. Prayer is how we talk to God. If you don't talk to your friends you lose interest in them. Talk to God. He loves hearing what's on your heart.
2. Maybe other things more important than God have crept into your heart. This is called idolatry and it's bad news. God wants and deserves first place in your life.
3. Or maybe you have been prideful lately thinking you don't need God. You've decided you can live life on your own. Don't be foolish. The Bible says that without God you can do nothing.
Point 3: So, do any of these reasons sound possible for your lack of joy in Jesus? If so, go to God. Tell Him how you're feeling. Ask Him for the strength to walk closely with Him. Before you know it, you'll be happy that it's today and that yesterday is in the past.
This 3-Point Bible Object Lesson for Kids was inspired by my reading of C.H. Spurgeon's devotional on Job 29:2 from his book Morning and Evening. You too can be inspired by your favorite Christian authors and come up with your own 3-Point Sermon for Kids.
