Winter Coughs and Respiratory Problems in Horses
It's not just horseback riders that cough and wheeze at this time of year. Respiratory problems are common in horses as well. Loss of performance may be the first sign that something is wrong. Mildly affected animals may cough occasionally when eating or when starting work. As the condition gets worse they may cough almost continuously.
Why is coughing such a problem in the winter? We need look no further than the changes in management that accompany the colder weather. Horses spend more time inside, often stabled in close proximity to their companions, giving any infection the opportunity to spread. They are exposed to irritants and allergens in the hay and bedding.
Recurrent airway obstruction (also known as COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is the horse equivalent of human asthma . It is an allergic condition, in which the horse reacts to small particles in the air. Chief among the culprits are fungal spores from the hay. This is a problem that seems to be becoming more common - probably due to the lack of good hay for horses.
We seem to have lost the ability to make good hay. Much of the hay fed to horses is dusty, and liberally sprinkled with fungal spores. Under poor storage conditions toxins such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS) can accumulate. These can cause inflammation of the respiratory tract.
Dust from the bedding may make the problem worse. It's important to keep the bed clean and dry. Replacing dusty straw with clean shavings may be a good idea. But if the shavings are allowed to build up into a soggy deep litter bed the ammonia and endotoxins may cause more irritation than the straw ever did, and may make matters worse.
When assessing the air quality in a stable, remember that the horse spends much of his time with his nose close to the ground. The air you breathe in the middle of the stable may be completely different from the air the horse breathes when he's sniffing around the floor or eating his hay.
It can be difficult to differentiate between infectious or environmental causes of coughing. What can be done to investigate the problem? The vet will observe your horse breathing and listen to the chest with a stethoscope. (This is not the time to talk to him or her!)
Respiratory infections may also be involved - in particular, viruses such as influenza, and equine herpes virus. If an infectious disease is suspected, swabs can be taken from the nose to try to identify the organism responsible. Blood samples may contain antibodies to the offending virus.
In persistent cases it may be necessary to collect a sample of fluid from the airways. This is usually done using a flexible endoscope.
Although medicines can be used to help clear the horse's chest and reduce the inflammation, the most important factor in treatment is allowing the horse to breathe clean fresh air.
So how can you prevent your winter schedule being disrupted by coughing? First of all, avoid feeding poor quality hay. Soaking it may help. The water damps down the dust and makes the spores swell. But it also washes the water-soluble nutrients out of the hay and so reduces the feeding value. (If there is any doubt about the hygienic quality of the hay, your veterinary surgeon or feed merchant may be able to have a sample tested to see if it is safe to feed.) Consider feeding haylage instead.
Let your horse have as much fresh air as possible. Turn out as much as the weather conditions allow. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in the stable or barn. Avoid the temptation to close the stable up, even in the coldest weather. Keep the bed as dust-free, and as clean, as possible. Do not muck out the stable with your horse in it. Give the bedding time to settle - preferably an hour or more - before bringing the horse back inside.
Give your horse clean air to breathe, and hopefully you will both enjoy a cough-free winter.

Need a name for my horse farm?
I need a name for my horse farm. Its going to me a boarding facilitie. There is about a 100 acres of trail. it is very windy almost everyday. Its next to my log cabin home and my fathers vegetable farm is down the lane way. The barn is going to be a wood pole barn 10 to 12 stalls.
I also have lots of pine trees on the land and the ground is sandy. there is alot of vegetable fields around
I'm working on the names that have to do with the wind -as I live where it is really windy too so I know what you mean. You may want to look at Indian names for wind as the natives are good with names that stand out. Maybe you don't want to be acres or farm, think about Ranch or stables

What about your fav band or song, author/book?
I love to play with words to come up with names - go with something totally not related - while making it attractive to potential boarders - kinda tricky! Not everyone has a name for their farm either! But I know where your coming from! Good luck (great question, I just keep thinking of names, you got me on a roll, who knows if it is what you are looking for.)

What Is the best way to heat my Pole Barn?
I am building a 32x56 pole barn with 16' walls, It will be insulated like a house and I am trying to figure out what would be the best and most reasonable way to heat it in the winter?
I agree with Dan the Brick Man, but I'd install baseboard radiators instead of in floor heat. Unless you'll be using the area for living space. Then the in-floor would work better.
Can't beat the operating cost of an outdoor wood burning boiler!
You'll also want to put your water heater on the system!

The Single-most Important Factor to Consider When Betting on Horse Racing
Do you study the official Going report when considering a bet? In this article professional punter Max Redd explains why the state of the Going is so important.
Weighing up the chances of a horse winning a particular race is a bit like completing a jigsaw. And I'm not talking about the jigsaw you bought for your 2 year-old last Christmas. I'm talking about one of those 2,000 piece monsters you never seem to be able to finish.
There are so many things to consider. But each little bit of information, each scrap of historic performance, has a bearing on whether your horse is likely to finish in front, or to be an also-ran.
But there is one vital piece of the jigsaw that often gets lost under the sofa. Many punters gloss over it, and some leave it out of their calculations altogether. But in my opinion it is one of the most crucial factors when assessing a race card -- the state of the Going.
It doesn't matter whether I am analysing the runners for the Vodafone Derby, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, or a class 6 apprentice handicap at Southwell -- the one question I always ask myself is "Will my horse be able to act over the prevailing ground conditions?"
This one piece of information, in my opinion, is more important than the distance to be raced, the track, the reputation of the trainer, and the jockey riding my horse.
The Going is the official state of the ground as judged by the race official known as the Clerk of the Course. The state of the Going underfoot can be categorized from one extreme to the other by one of the following descriptions: Hard, Firm, Good to Firm, Good, Good to Soft, Soft, and finally Heavy. Traditionally the ground had been described after race officials had walked the Course and prodded the ground with a walking-stick. Thankfully, today the technology exists to provide a much more consistent and objective assessment.
The Going is very important because often horses will have a preference for running (or "acting") on one type of ground over another. Its not surprising that horses of differing physical and genetic make-up will behave differently in they way they handle various racing surfaces.
So how can the average punter increase his profits by considering these differences?
The first thing we can do is to get down to the paddock before a race and check out the size of the horses' feet. Why? Well, generally a horse with big hoofs akin to 'soup-plates' will be much better suited to softer ground. This is because the weight of the horse is spread across a bigger area, and it is able to 'skim' over the ground rather than getting stuck in the mud. Horses with smaller 'donkey' feet are more likely to sink that little further, and their progress will be that more laboured.
Once the horses have left the paddock its time to take your position in the stands, and train your binoculars on the horses as they go to Post. Although the horses will not be running flat out, the shrewd observer can still take away a few more golden nuggets of information before deciding whether or not to place a bet.
The thing to look out for is the horse's 'action'. By that I mean exactly how the horse strides along. A horse with a 'rounded' action lifts his knees up high in each stride, and is better suited to racing over softer ground. A horse with a 'daisy-cutting' stride barely lifts his hoofs off the racing surface. This type of horse is more likely to appreciate going which is firmer under foot. These generalisations are obviously never going to be 100% accurate, but you would be amazed how many times you can avoid placing a stupid bet on a horse who is not likely to relish the conditions. Making a profit from betting is just as much about avoiding losers as spotting winners.
When you are betting on a race for 2 year-olds there is often very little form to work on. So if the conditions underfoot are leaning towards either end of the Going scale, then you can uncover a value bet by observing the horses as they canter to the starting stalls. You can save yourself a bundle if you determine that the horse at the head of the market, is in fact showing signs that he will not find the Going to his liking.
Having a working knowledge of how and why different horses run well on various surfaces, will only add to your chances of making an overall profit versus the bookmakers.
