What Are The Hidden Benefits of Educational Games Such as Playing with Schleich Figures
When I was growing up just after the end of the second World War the only media influences that children were subjected to were the radio, and billboard posters, until, when I was about nine, black and white television came along.
These days, however, children are bombarded on all sides by television, and by computer social sites and games, many of these media employing commercial pressures and fantasies that suck children into a virtual world. Many children hardly play outside at all now, preferring instead to spend hours on Facebook or playing the latest fantasy computer game.
As a result of this, many children, especially those who live in towns, are entirely ignorant of wildlife and the wonders of nature. They have little or no knowledge of the vast array of animals in the world, and their knowledge of history is limited to the biased and often exaggerated depictions of the superheroes on television.
Television viewing is entirely passive and requires no input at all from a child, who can sit for hours in front of it just absorbing material that is often trivial and without any educational value. Even computer games that require some input from a child, are more often of the "shoot-em up" type, requiring little thought, but simply quick reactions.
How much better it is for a child to play with actual three-dimensional toys for at least part of their day. Actual physical toy s that they can hold and move around are of tremendous value to children in that they encourage inter-active play. The educational value of action toys, such as those produced by Schleich, is that the child is encouraged to imagine the scenario into which the models or figures can fit, and to create in their mind a story line about them.
Schleich figures are very life-like and exquisitely detailed, and can encourage role-playing in children, an essential part of their learning about development of social skills and inter-acting with others.

If you have young children you should not deny them the pleasures and benefits of letting them play with real toys from as early an age as possible. The advantages of allowing them to play with action toys like Schleich models are immeasurable, connecting them to the real world rather than restricting them to a virtual one.

Frustrated with my Stallion?
I bought a 1 1/2 year old stallion a couple months ago. I didn't have a trailer so the people delivered him. She told me that he has been handled since birth, is a sweetheart etc. Turns out that I can't even touch his feet, if I do he tries to kick me with his front feet or tries to rear up. If I try to touch his back feet he turns towards me and tries to kick me. I don't know what to do. I called the breeder and asked if she would take him back but she said she can't even though she told me when she sold him to me that she would. I think she knew he had problems and lied about it to me. Is there some kind of a horse lemon law? I love his personality and if I wanted a big dog I'd keep him but I'm so scared that he will hurt me. He is a percheron and weighs 1300 lbs and 15 hands at 1 1/2 years old so don't know what to do in this case. Any opinions and suggestions would be appreciated.

Definitely get him gelded. People used to believe that it stunted their growth if they were gelded before 2, but there is no evidence to show that this is actually true. Even if it did, he is already very big, so it is not as if you will end up with a really small horse.

How much young horse experience do you have? Do you know someone who has worked with young horses who can help you? It sounds as though it might be safer for you to find him another home. At the least, you need to be very firm with him about his manners, and work slowly to getting him used to having his feet and legs handled. Lots and lots of handling, don't let him get away with anything at all, let him know every time he has done something right (petting his neck or rubbing his favourite spot and saying "Good boy, Little Baby Damien" (or whatever his name is).
Please, whatever you do, make sure that you are safe. A bad mannered youngster this size has the potential to injure you badly.

It would be far easier to get rid of this moisture and to allow it to evaporate rather quickly as the fringe blew freely away from the rest of the clothing.
While you might not come across any prickly bushes or chaparral when you are out riding, chaps can still give you that extra element of protection for your legs, helping you to avoid fatigue when riding for extended periods of time.

Back to school on a budget
Back-to-school time is just a few weeks away. Finally children can stop complaining about being bored at home, and parents can breathe a sigh of relief for the needed break. However, this time can also bring financial challenges for many parents who are faced with rising costs and shrinking budgets.
What can parents to do when the prices of everyday necessities are climbing out of reach, their paycheques remain constant, and their kids keep demanding the latest, coolest stuff to go back to school? If you are faced with this dilemma, take at look at the following money-saving tips:
Make a budget
As with all your other spending needs, it’s best to make a budget. Know exactly how much money you can afford to spend on back-to-school and allocate funds accordingly. Plan to spend more money on important items like shoes, but cut back on the cost of disposable supplies such as stationery. Involve your children in this budgeting process, so that they can appreciate why you may not be able to fulfill all their desires for expensive items.
Start early
Get a head start by getting the book and supply lists as soon as possible from your child’s school. Starting early gives you enough time to hunt for better deals, and if you wait until the last minute you might be forced into buying higher-priced items without concern for the cost. To really think ahead, continually look out for off-peak sales during the year on standard items like crayons and exercise books.
Look out for bargains
Accustomed to only shopping in well-known uptown locations? You’re missing out on a world of discount buying opportunities available downtown, or in off-beat locations. Walk around with your school list and make notes of the prices of required items at different locations. There are some stores that have special discounts days, so postpone your purchasing until those times. Ask other parents to share their best bargain locations.
Stick to the basics
For school shopping, leave out the bling. Your children really don’t need to have a wardrobe full of brand names, what they need is high quality, durable items. Look for real leather school shoes and sturdy equipment that can last for the year. Stay away from backpacks and lunch kits with action heroes or cartoon characters. Although these might be able last for more than one school year, they may be rejected by your kids next year if they are out of fashion.
Don’t buy everything at once
Find out which items are really needed for the start of school. Some books may not be used until the following terms, so you could concentrate on buying for the first term if money is limited. Check around at home before you start shopping, to see if any of your children’s clothes still fit, or if you had stored away extra pencils or notebooks that were never used. Don’t buy too many clothes in your kids’ current sizes - buy some one size larger to take care of growth spurts during the school year.
Team up
Wholesale shopping may be the answer to cutting costs. While you might not need three dozen notebooks or a case of pencils for your own children, you could join with other parents and purchase supplies together. You could also check with them for school books and equipment that their kids have outgrown, which might be appropriate for your younger children. Some schools and churches have organized swap meets where these exchanges can be done.
Check out alternative shopping locations
If you have internet access and a credit card, shopping online can provide you with more variety and significant savings. Stick to well-known sites such as Amazon.com, Target.com or Walmart.com to find deals on school supplies and children’s clothing. There are several companies in Jamaica offering services which allow you to ship your online purchases back home. Take advantage of outlet malls and other inexpensive options overseas, by combining your summer vacation with an annual shopping excursion for your children.
Start planning for next year
It’s not too early to start preparing for September 2009. Make a plan to save something every month for your back-to-school expenses, and next year’s shopping will be almost stress-free.
